Scent Profile: Fruity, Gourmand

This scent is also available as a soap and sugar scrub.

Mary Bowser is the popularly-known name of a Civil War spy. She more likely was named Mary Jane Richards, Mary Jane Richards Denman, or Mary Jane Richards Garvin, but her real name is currently lost to time.

Born into slavery, Mary became a free woman when her owner died, as upon his death, his daughter illegally freed her father's slaves. That daughter was Elizabeth Van Lew, the abolitionist, who also covertly ran one of the Union's most successful spy rings. She took an interest in Mary and saw to her education.

Mary married Wilson Bowser just days after the beginning of the US civil war. Though she never officially used his last name, it has nonetheless become part of her widely-known moniker. Soon after, Van Lew recruited her to join her spy ring, and Mary accepted.

On one occasion, posing as a laundress, she was even able to infiltrate CSA President Jefferson Davis's home in search of sensitive documents. Many Union generals, among them future US President Ulysses S. Grant, noted the worth of her spy ring in their intelligence communiques.

After the civil war, Mary worked as a teacher for formerly-enslaved persons, and also traveled widely speaking of her experiences using many pseudonyms. The date and circumstances of her death are as-yet unknown.

Available in candle tin or glass tumbler format.

Tins: Our 8oz candle tin measures 3" wide by 2" deep, and holds approximately 7 oz of wax by weight. The wax is topped with an overspray of iridescent glitter. The candles burn for approximately 30-35 hours.

Glass tumblers: These candles measure 3" wide by 3.5" tall, and contain 9 oz of wax for a burn time of 40+ hours. They are topped with a candle-safe glittering overspray.

The glitter I use is safe for use in candles, and the ultrafine particles will not clog your wick.

Turnaround time for candles is 2 weeks. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you may occasionally receive a professionally-printed label with a handwritten scent name, similar to what is used in the Secret Menu candles. We are experiencing delays from our label printing service, and would rather not hold up your orders. If you feel strongly about receiving a particular label, please email us at and we will do our best to accomodate your request.
